Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love and Liberation

19 June 2015 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

In this open community conversation, the Black prophetic tradition meets the wisdom of Dharma—the seat of the mindfulness movement—to offer a new lens as Black Prophetic Wisdom. Starting off with a dialogue between Rev. angel Kyodo williams Sensei and Lama Rod Owens, then opened to the community, it is designed to bring the teachings of the dharma to bear on the social injustice, white supremacy, and racism we encounter in our everyday lives and in our places of refuge, and to point firmly in the direction of healing and liberation for people and the planet.

Previously held in Atlanta, Brooklyn and Boston, this event celebrates Juneteenth, symbolically kicks off the end to the LEGACY of slavery and the structural racism left in its wake.

Join Rev. angel Kyodo williams Sensei and Lama Rod Owens in the last of this series of public conversations to be held at this time.

***Limited Seating*** Previous events were standing room only. Reserve your space today. This project is currently self-funded. Your support is appreciated.

This evening will take place as part of the newDharma Community’s urbanRetreat Thursday evening-Sunday midday.  If you would like to join us for that, please register here.

Background

RADICAL DHARMA is a long overdue conversation about how we can remain accountable to social transformation while facing the truths of racism and privilege on and of the cushion.

RADICAL DHARMA is part of a heart-based response to the killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner that moves a CONVERSATION about the legacy of racial injustice in this country, through grief, apathy, burn-out, and alienation towards a collective reimagining of beloved community, collective healing and the meaning of justice.

Lama Rod and Rev. angel are leading this series of RADICAL DHARMA conversations as the first step in compiling essays and interviews that will become a book on race, privilege, and healing that follows in the prophetic tradition of Cornel West and bell hooks’ Breaking Bread: Insurgent Black Intellectual Life, a pivotal book by the two prevailing black intellectuals of the times.
